Contrary to popular opinion, not ‘every’ Dragon is born from an egg incubated inside a superheated volcano—in the deeps of the wildest forests, there is a species of Dragon that hatches from eggs the size of a castle’s keep, sheltered from the elements and prey alike, under the leaves of the largest trees known to anyone—the Titanicus Macrophyllus. These eggs, once hatched, unleash a titanic beast unto the realm—the fire-breathing, leaf-munching Dragon Caterpillar. These peaceful colossi have an insatiable appetite, driving them to gather, cook, and nibble on as many leaves as possible. It’s not uncommon for an unsuspecting adventuring party to stumble across a giant leaf pile and joyfully kick it into oblivion—unaware a Dragon Caterpillar is snoozing at the heart of it. It’s only when its prized leaf pile has been disturbed that a usually passive Dragon Caterpillar will turn into one of the angriest creatures in the realm, even angrier than a Barbarian Wasp—and those critters are really bad-tempered.

It’s worth pointing out that a Dragon Caterpillar will stay in this mid-development state, lumbering up tree trunks to gather leaves for their leaf pile, for well over a thousand years—only metamorphosing into a Dragon Butterfly (a beautiful fire-breathing beast that flitters around with no clear objective or direction beyond looking pretty) once it has collected enough leaves to cocoon itself inside it’s baked leaf-pile.

Given that the Dragon Caterpillar is regarded as one of the rarest Dragons in existence, even rarer than a Gold Dragon, and the chances are spotting one are exceedingly slim—think upon that next time when you come across a massive pile of leaves in the forest that tempts you to kick it out of existence…
